Based on the life and stories of a real author, E.T.A. Hoffmann, this opera strings together several of the authors stories in attempts to explain how they came to be. A true tragic tenor hero, Hoffmann must meet his "true love" in several different scenarios all while his muse urges him to write instead of chase these un-gettable women.

Based on a Sir Walter Scott poem, "The Lady of the Lake," the story revolves around Elena a hopeless romantic who pines for a local shepherd. One day King James, in disguise, spots Elena and attempts to woe her. Still in love with the shepherd, Elena cannot be swayed. The King in desperation attempts to set up her father in a scandal in order to blackmail Elena into loving him.
